TA Coalition Webinar: Deflection, Diversion and Mental Health Recovery: A Systems Approach and DEI Practice Perspective

A SAMHSA sponsored two-part series webinar presented by Mental Health America, took place Friday, July 15, 2022 from 12:30-2:00pm Eastern Time (Part One) and Wednesday, July 20, 2022 from 1:00-2:00pm Eastern Time (Part Two) called “Deflection, Diversion and Mental Health Recovery: A Systems Approach and DEI Practice Perspective

Description:

U.S. prisons and jails incarcerate a disproportionate amount of people with current or past mental health challenges, especially those with serious mental illness, but often fail to properly support the individuals’ recovery or community reintegration after release. In Illinois, Treatment Alternatives for Safe Communities (TASC) is at the forefront of justice system interventions and recovery supports, specializing where behavioral health and criminal justice intersect. TASC’s justice programs reach tens of thousands of people across Illinois each year, deflecting and diverting at-risk individuals away from the justice system and into health and self-sufficiency in their communities. In this webinar, Jac Charlier, Executive Director of TASC’s Center for Health and Justice, will share TASC’s history in deflection and diversion efforts as a systems-level evidence-based practice as well as introducing the original TASC model. Then, Joel Johnson, President and CEO, TASC Inc., will present on individual-level, sensible alternatives to incarceration, and best practices in jail release and community reentry services for people with SMI. This will be framed through the lens of DEI inclusive of race, gender, sexuality, and income.
