This webinar features information about Ohio’s approach for utilizing the SAMHSA Mental Health Block Grant five percent set-side funds for evidence-based programs that address the needs of individuals with early serious mental illness, including psychotic disorders. Dr. Mark Hurst, Medical Director of Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS), provides an overview of the framework used to distribute the funds to two community behavioral health providers. The process was based on SAMHSA and NIMH recommendations, existing Ohio strengths and initiatives, and the availability of technical support. Through a statewide request for proposal, experienced agencies were chosen to develop or expand first episode psychosis (FEP) programs in various parts of the state. The presentation includes specific information from the two providers, Coleman Professional Services and Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health, about their projects that operate in nine counties located in urban, rural and suburban areas of Ohio. Information about the team composition, staff recruitment and training, outreach activities, data collection and initial client outcomes regarding employment and education is shared.
