Jennifer Shumaker, LMSW
Education:
Jennifer attended Eastern Michigan University and obtained her Bachelor of Social Work degree in 2012 and went on to attend Wayne State University to obtain her Masters in Social Work in December of 2013. Jennifer worked full time while pursuing her Master’s degree along with an internship.
Professional Experience:
When she first began her career she worked with the homeless families helping people find work, strengthen parenting skills and maintain stable housing. This work experience fueled her passion for working with those struggling with mental illness. While attending Wayne State University she had the opportunity to provide therapy at The Women’s Center of Southeastern Michigan. This internship would be vital to the future of her career decisions. Jennifer has worked with diverse populations and in multidisciplinary teams throughout her career. After receiving her Master’s Degree, she moved on to CNS Healthcare in 2014 using her skills to provide case management services to those living with severe and persistent mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders. It was here she found the need for Integrated Primary and Behavioral Health Care among the consumers she served. In October 2015 CNS Healthcare was awarded a 1.6 million dollar grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to improve primary and behavioral healthcare integration among CNS consumers. Jennifer accepted the position as the Integrated Care Team Lead in October 2015. Jennifer has helped establish community primary care partners, offer on-site wellness programs, create protocols to more closely monitor the health of consumers and to educate staff on integration and chronic health conditions. This experience created opportunities for Jennifer to move into the role of Program Manager in June 2017 and then a promotion to Clinical Program Director with CNS in June 2019. Jennifer continues to work towards improving primary and behavioral healthcare integration and coordination, promoting wellness, encouraging the growth and success of students and creating a strong therapeutic program for consumers at CNS to promote their stability and recovery. Jennifer is also an experienced clinical therapist and has provided private practice therapy. Jennifer manages the SAMHSA Primary and Behavioral Healthcare Integration (PBHCI) grant, Integrated Care Program, Therapy Program, Student Interns and oversees the staff licensing and clinical supervision of limited licensed staff. Jennifer is fully licensed through the State of Michigan as a Masters Social Worker and a member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). She is clinically trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma informed treatments, and successfully completed Middle Management Academy through the National Council for Behavioral Health.
