The presentation highlights the CMS-funded Demonstration to Maintain Independence and Employment (DMIE) project that allowed awarded states to provide Medicaid equivalent healthcare coverage and employment support services for working adults with a disabling condition such as a serious mental illness or co-occurring conditions. The objective of DMIE was to determine if enhanced healthcare coverage and employment support would prevent future dependence of federal disability benefits programs. Dena Stoner from Texas and MaryAlice Mowry from Minnesota presented on the development, implementation and lessons learned from DMIE projects in their states: Texas' Preventing Disability: "Working Well" and Minnesota's Stay Well, Stay Working . The presenters discussed how the project reduced federal benefits rolls, improved access to health care, and provided insight into strategies that could be employed with the expansion of the Medicaid population in 2014.
