A. NASMHPD is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the needs
of the nation's public mental health system through policy development,
information dissemination, and technical assistance. Specifically, NASMHPD
represents the $29.5 billion public mental health service delivery system
serving 6.1 million people annually in all 50 states, 4 territories, and
the District of Columbia. We operate under a cooperative agreement with
the National Governors Association and we are the only national association
to represent state mental health commissioners/directors and their agencies.

Q. What is NASMHPD’s relationship with the NASMHPD Research Institute,
Inc. (NRI)?
A. In its early days, NASMHPD maintained a research division that was
reconstituted in 1987 as the NASMHPD Research Institute, Inc. (NRI), a
separate non-profit organization. The NRI provides the evaluation and
data analysis capacity to NASMHPD. The NRI's distinctive competencies
include performance measurement systems; data collection and analysis;
program assessment; evaluation design and methodology; policy analysis;
evidence based practices; information systems development and implementation;
human and technical network development and management; knowledge management;
