Q. How do you pronounce NASMHPD?

A. NASMHPD, the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors, is pronounced "NASH-bid."

Q. Where is NASMHPD’s office located, and how can I get there?

A. The NASMHPD office is located in Virginia, just minutes south of Washington, D.C. in historic Old Town Alexandria. Our General Information Web page includes NASMHPD’s address, contact info, and office hours, as well as driving directions, parking information, public transportation options, a map of the Alexandria area, and links to real-time travel-related updates such as local weather and airport delays.


Q. What does NASMHPD do?

A. NASMHPD is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the needs of the nation's public mental health system through policy development, information dissemination, and technical assistance. Specifically, NASMHPD represents the $29.5 billion public mental health service delivery system serving 6.1 million people annually in all 50 states, 4 territories, and the District of Columbia. We operate under a cooperative agreement with the National Governors Association and we are the only national association to represent state mental health commissioners/directors and their agencies. Q. What is NASMHPD’s relationship with the NASMHPD Research Institute, Inc. (NRI)?

A. In its early days, NASMHPD maintained a research division that was reconstituted in 1987 as the NASMHPD Research Institute, Inc. (NRI), a separate non-profit organization. The NRI provides the evaluation and data analysis capacity to NASMHPD. The NRI's distinctive competencies include performance measurement systems; data collection and analysis; program assessment; evaluation design and methodology; policy analysis; evidence based practices; information systems development and implementation; human and technical network development and management; knowledge management; and technical assistance on these and related topics. Q. Who are NASMHPD’s members?

A. NASMHPD’s primary members are the commissioners/directors of the 55 state and territorial mental health departments in the United States.


Q. Where can I find more information on mental health words and terms such as “Assertive Community Treatment,” “dual eligibles,” and “telepsychiatry”?

A. Visit NASMHPD’s Mental Health Glossary for an alphabetical listing of definitions for these and dozens of other words and phrases.


Q. Where can I go to find out more about mental health issues and advocacy efforts, beyond what NASMHPD is doing?

A. NASMHPD’s Mental Health Links page offers site visitors a gateway to dozens of mental health-related Web sites, including all pertinent federal Web sites, each state mental health agency’s site, and many more applicable Web sites from local, state and national organizations.


Q. Is there a way to view NASMHPD’s Web site without the graphics and interactive menus?

A. Yes. The NASMHPD Web site features a “Bobby-approved” version of its Web site. Each NASMHPD Web site page provides a “Text Version” link to a Section 508-compliant Web page that is designed to be more user-friendly for those who prefer to view Web pages without graphics and repetitive navigation.
